Listing to the radio today I heard an announcer talking about the way President Obama is “running the country.” I don’t remember if it was positive or negative, it’s not relevant. No, my point is that no one person runs the country. No individual, organization, or group has the ability or authority to do so. The U.S. Constitution was formulated so as to prohibit the government from running much of anything.
President Obama runs the Executive branch of the federal government. He doesn’t even run the entire federal government much less the state and local governments. And woe to the person that thinks he runs the economy. The President can lead and set an agenda but he can’t determine what’s best for each person. Furthermore, governments can use laws to limit human activity but even that is impossible (consider those that break the law).
Subsequently, the truth is no matter how big the government gets it’s up to each citizen manage his own life. Each individual must make a choice for every aspect of their life. For example, even to receive a government benefit you still have to fill out the paperwork or at least get someone to do it for you.
Your life is run by you and only you. The only portion of your life that anyone else can run is that which you delegate, and yes, many of us are delegating our individual responsibilities to our government but that discussion is for another day. What are you willing to delegate to the government to manage for you?
